چکیده

Introduction: QUE 94201 (QUE) is a basaltic shergottite containing subequal amounts of pyroxene and plagioclase, the latter having been converted to maskelynite by shock (Fig. 1) [e.g., 1-3]. Pyroxene occurs as elongate subhedral to euhedral grains up to several mm in length. It has extensive and complex zoning (Fig 1). Typical grains have Mg-rich pigeonite cores mantled by Mg-rich augite, which is in turn rimmed by Fe-rich pigeonite that is sometimes rimmed by a thin discontinuous layer of hedenbergite. Grains often display sector zoning and complex interlayering of augite and pigeonite. This zoning provides a rich record of the crystallization of this meteorite, a point to which we shall return below.

Rb-Sr AND Sm-Nd STUDIES OF OLIVINE-PHYRIC SHERGOTTITES RBT 04262 AND LAR 06319: ISOTOPIC EVIDENCE FOR RELATIONSHIP TO ENRICHED BASALTIC SHERGOTTITES

Introduction: RBT 04262 and LAR 06319 are two Martian meteorites recently discovered in Antarctica. Both contain abundant olivines, and were classified as olivinephyric shergottites [1]. A detailed petrographic study of RBT 04262 by [2] suggested it should be reclassified as a lherzolitic shergottite. However, the moderately LREE-depleted REE distribution pattern [3] indicated that it is closel...

Controls on Highly Siderophile Element Concentrations in Martian Basalt: Sulfide Saturation and Under-saturation

Introduction: Highly siderophile elements (HSE; Re, Au and the platinum group elements) in shergottites exhibit a wide range from very high, similar to the terrestrial mantle, to very low, similar to sulfide saturated mid ocean ridge basalt (e.g., [1]). This large range has been difficult to explain without good constraints on sulfide saturation or under-saturation [2]. A new model for predicti...

Role of syn-eruptive plagioclase disequilibrium crystallization in basaltic magma ascent dynamics

Timescales of magma ascent in conduit models are typically assumed to be much longer than crystallization and gas exsolution for basaltic eruptions. However, it is now recognized that basaltic magmas may rise fast enough for disequilibrium processes to play a key role on the ascent dynamics. The quantification of the characteristic times for crystallization and exsolution processes are fundamen...

Ages and Geologic Histories of Martian Meteorites

We review the radiometric ages of the 16 currently known Martian meteorites, classified as 11 shergottites (8 basaltic and 3 lherzolitic), 3 nakhlites (clinopyroxenites), Chassigny (a dunite), and the orthopyroxenite ALH84001. The basaltic shergottites represent surface lava flows, the others magmas that solidified at depth. Shock effects correlate with these compositional types, and, in each c...

AGE AND PETROGENESIS OF PICRITIC SHERGOTTITE NWA 1068: Sm-Nd AND Rb-Sr ISOTOPIC

Introduction: NWA 1068 is a 577g picritic shergottite found in the Moroccan Sahara in 2001[1]. The meteorite resembles several other picritic shergottites, e.g. EETA79001B, DaG476, SaU005 and Dho019, in major-element chemistry and mineralogy, but it differs significantly from these meteorites in REE distribution pattern. It has a slightly LREE-depleted pattern commonly shared by some olivine-fr...
